In 2010, Chiwara began an amazing adventure in Highland Park, a city within the city of Detroit. As part of the inaugural Green Economy Leadership Training, we taught and certified 10 young adults in Permaculture Design. This 9 week summer residency program trained this first generation of “new work” leaders in urban farming, renewable energy and sustainable community development.
The history of Highland Park is storied and great. We fell in love with the people and spirit of this community, and continue to play a small part in it’s big resurgence.
In 2011, we increased to 22 students in our PDC course, and installed a huge four season hoop house for year round growing.
We facilitate the Highland Park Permaculture Guild. These weekly community meetings, permaculture trainings and workshops are held at the Distributed Power – GELT Movement Center, located 2 blocks from Henry Ford’s Model T factory. Check out our events page for more details.
